A Gift For your Parents and/or Family

We will construct a gift for your family as a way to keepsake this historical time in our lives. The Task: Design a folder to keep a copy of President Elect Obama's Speech.

  1. You will need to pick key phrases from your speech that you think captures the overall feeling of Barack Omama’s speech—I have provided some on the board, but I encourage you to think of your own. "Democracy"...."Individual Liberty"...."Self-reliance"...."brick by brick....calloused hand, by calloused hand".....flip through your copy of his speech and/or your Graphic Organizer.

2. Please go to Microsoft Word 2007—click on "new document"
Go to “Insert”—then click “Word Art” –play around with the words and shapes.

3. If you think it will go over the page, then you will have to click "Format" to either edit your text or change the sizing.

4. When ready to save, I will come around with my TRAVELDrive to be saved for me to print at home.

This is an on-going project, please do not rush through--I encourage you to start collecting newspaper clippings, magazine pics, etc. of Barack Obama and/or anything patriotic.

Patriotic--having or showing love and support for oneʼs country; faithful, loyal, having pride on one's country.

Have fun!

Pablo Picasso's Work

In the topic Young At Art, the artist, Alexandra Nechita is compared to Pablo Picasso. The passage mentions that her type of artwork is called abstract. I have found a few paintings Of Picasso's artwork that illustrate this type of abstract work. Remember, abstract means unrealistic. Abstract art seeks to break away from traditional representation of physical objects. It explores the relationships of forms and colors, whereas more traditional art represents the world in recognizable images. I, personally, don't find it very appealing, but a good friend of mine just loves absract work for its simplicity. Take a look!

Welcome to READ 180

Hello, students! I have set up this blog so that you may check in from time to time for various support and guidance on the following things:

  • lessons
  • assignments
  • vocabulary
  • helpful websites
  • expectations of you in READ 180
I will have you stop in occasionally, so that you may be "on course" and will have a better understanding of the components of this class. Even though we have done a wonderful job with rotations, reading logs, graphic organizers, quickwrites, whole group discussions, Reading Counts quizzes, etc., please know I will start implementing and expecting much more from all of you. Second Quarter, my goal is take you even further with the books we are reading with more discussions, and perhaps more projects with the books. I do want you to realize that it is your responsibility to do QW's, GO's, Reading Logs in Independent Reading Group and continue reading books. I am hearing, "I am finished with my book." Well, start another! We are reading every day! More information and lessons will come in other postings, but I must now direct your attention to what we will be doing for the next couple of days.

After such an exciting night--Election Night--hearing President Elect Barack Obama's Victory Speech, I must admit, I have to set aside some time to devote to this wonderful, exciting, and historic time in our lives. I know that we all feel so much emotion over this victory=whether feeling that we are a part of history as a nation, a young generation, or just being overjoyed and hopeful for our future, we cannot ignore what an eloquent Victory Speech given by President Elect Obama. Because we have been working on Main Idea and Details throughout this workshop, and this workshop is about to come to a close, I feel that we need some extra practice on this skill. Many were awake celebrating the victory and were able to watch and hear our newly elected president's speech--others did not get the chance to see or hear it.

Our lesson for the next couple of days will be to identify main ideas and supporting details of President Elect Barack Obama's Victory Speech. We do know that the topic is: Barack Obama's Victory Speech. We will listen and read together his speech and stop to identify main ideas along with details to support the main ideas throughout his speech.

Please take a look at the following slideshow from the gallery of STLToday. These pictures capture the emotions felt after hearing the victory news.
